Music Stand

I built this music stand several years ago when I was at home during break from college.  I think that going home from college to one's parent's house usually brings back joyful memories like waking up to the sound of dad grinding coffee, and going to bed full of mom's delicious cooking. This was true for me too, but add to that waking to the sound of the table saw which was situated in the middle of what used to be the grand dining-room, and going to bed in a house filled with aromas of mom's delicious cooking, mixed with the sweet scent of freshly cut pine, cherry, or mahogany.
The other thing filling the house was usually an assortment of musical instruments ranging from my dad's clarinet's and oboes which he played professionally for years, to the upright piano, several guitars, a mandolin, a brief appearance by a flute and cello, and of course the set of recorders that my cousin used to play, one in each nostril.
This music stand was inspired by the guitars. (The nostril flutes didn't require sheet music.) The stand was designed to be at eye level when sitting with a guitar, and then extends to be at eye level when you play standing up.
Like most of my work, there is very little hardware. The only metal  or plastic in this whole piece is the small knob at the neck that allows you to tilt the angle of the head. I had plans to fashion this piece out of wood, but my university had plans for me to return to college.... They won, and I spent the two bucks on the knob which probably saved me a week and a half of designing a handmade solution.
