WATER TOWER LAMP

This lamp is a scale model of the Lucky Strike water tower in Durham. I've always loved the structure of water towers! The logo is printed on the inside of the shade, so it's only visible when the lamp is on.

WOODEN TRAIN

We built this little train from scratch with scraps from the shop. It's powered by a 12v cordless drill motor. The chassis is steel bar, and the body is various hardwoods. Cranking the knob on the roof controls speed. The track is strips of oak.

BARN DOOR

Made from scraps from my woodshop. Even made the hardware from scratch. I used Craigscrews to attach the wood scraps to one another. It took 8 million screws... next time, biscuits.

BERKELEY CLOCK TOWER

Graffiti Walls are a simple campaign, with endless possibilities and they offer are great opportunity for deep conversations with strangers. Pose questions that are relevant to the time, location, and audience, and ask passersby to comment. Tailoring the questions to the session, plenary, or class that just ended makes it particularly compelling, and offering free cookies never hurts. ;)
In this case, we constructed an 11 foot-tall model of the Berkeley Campanile. The four sides velcro together for easy transport and installation on side. Made of 1/4 ply, the whole thing can be carried by 2 people.

ANDY'S BOOKCASE

Andy commissioned this bookcase. He wanted something with a modern feel, that used reclaimed materials. He moves frequently between trips abroad so he wanted it to be easily disassembled and reassembled. The shelves are reclaimed 2x12's from the local salvage depot. The uprights are Cherry box posts. The shelves unbolt from the posts for easy transport and storage. The guitar holder is lined with velvet to protect the guitar surfaces. We originally discussed it being a straightforward bookcase, but as I learned more about his hobbies and storage needs, we decided to get creative.

Giant Hashtag

Picture
Giant Hashtag: This one is made from 2" insulation foam. The letters velcro to a wood base so the whole thing was easily disassembled to move it to various locations at the conference. It looked just as good on the lawn as it did as the backdrop of the plenary.

DIY PUPPET

This was a team effort with my 4yo. My son named this guy "Tanger" because his head looks like a tangerine.

MOBILE COFFEE CART

This bike – drawn coffee cart was made primarily from a reclaimed EasyUp pop up tent.

GIANT COFFEE CUP

Giant Coffee Cup: Chug! Chug! Chug! This attention grabbing caffeine bucket instructed conference attendees to write an anonymous uplifting message on a coffee sleeve and leave it on a coffee cup for someone else to use. It's a pick-me-up on a pick-me-up.

Curious about it's construction? See below for pics of it's transformation from an ordinary kitchen trash can...
